# Was ist die Invalidenversicherung (IV)?
**«Die Schwester der AHV»**
Die schweizerische Invalidenversicherung (IV) ist wie die AHV und die Krankenversicherung eine gesamtschweizerische obligatorische Versicherung. Ihr Ziel ist es, den Versicherten mit Eingliederungsmassnahmen oder Geldleistungen die Existenzgrundlage zu sichern, wenn sie invalid werden.\

Die IV ist Teil des eidgenössischen Sozialversicherungsnetzes. Dieses basiert auf dem Drei-Säulen-Prinzip: die staatliche Versicherung mit IV, AHV und den Ergänzungsleistungen (EL) als erste Säule, die berufliche Vorsorge (Pensionskasse) als zweite Säule und die Selbstvorsorge als dritte Säule. Dieses Sozialversicherungssystem wird ergänzt durch die öffentliche Sozialhilfe: Auch als Fürsorge bezeichnet, bildet sie das letzte Auffangnetz.\

Wie bei der AHV und den Ergänzungsleistungen besteht auch bei der IV ein Rechtsanspruch auf Leistungen, wenn die im Gesetz genau festgelegten Bedingungen erfüllt sind.\

Die schweizerische Invalidenversicherung gibt es seit 1960. Ihre Entstehung geht auf das Jahr 1925 zurück, als das Schweizer Stimmvolk einem Verfassungsartikel zur Schaffung einer Alters- und Invalidenversicherung zustimmte.
